Let me start by saying how thankful I am for each student in our class! I’m so blessed to be able to spend every day with them and help them be successful. With Christmas coming so soon, we have been doing lots of Christmas activities!
We did a concept map for Santa Claus. The students provided all of the words to help us describe what we know about Santa Claus.
We did the same thing after we read How the Grinch Stole Christmas a few days later for the Grinch. They also wrote about how to make the Grinch grin.
We also finished our Santa letters this week, they will be in the Daily Chief Union soon, so keep an eye out for those!
Our biggest project this week was a gingerbread man project. So far, we have read 4 different versions of the gingerbread man story. The highlight, however, was when they all go to eat a gingerbread cookie! They had to write about how they eat a cookie using sequence words like first, next, then, and last. They did a rough draft and a final draft on pretty winter paper. I will hang their final drafts and a picture of them in the hallway early next week. The rough draft and the map they used to show what they ate should have been in their folders on Friday.
We had a busy week in math. We finished up numbers 11-20 and worked on addition quite a bit. By the end of kindergarten, they need to be able to add and subtract within 10, and be fluent (that means they know the answer without thinking about it – kind of like sight words) with addition and subtraction up to 5. They used some dice this week to add them together and graph their answers with a partner.
In Language Arts Last week, our comprehension skill was Cause and Effect. We learned that the cause is what makes something else (the effect) happens. We read Pete the Cat Loves His White Shoes and found some cause and effect in the story. (My kids love the Pete the Cat – have they told you about him?)
Next week is our last week before Christmas Break! Our letter will be o, and we will be working on the short o sound, like in opera. Our sight words are they, you, and of. In math, we are going to work on addition and graphing.
On Monday, I will be sending home a paper for you to fill out with your child. It asks about your family’s holiday traditions. Please return this by Thursday to share with the class.
Friday we will be watching a Christmas movie with second grade. The movie is Santa Buddies. We will provide popcorn, but I am asking you to send one drink with your child on Friday for them to enjoy during the movie. Friday is the last day of school until Monday, January 7.
