First Weekly Wrap Up of 2013!

We had a good first week back from break. We were very busy with lots of different activities.

In Math, we have started to work on measuring liquids. We followed a simple recipe and looked at how many cups it takes to make a quart. Here we are adding 2 cups of yellow and 2 cups of blue to see what we can make. Before the last cup of blue went in, one of the sweet little ones said "The pressure's on!" It was so fun.

We also worked on covering designs with pattern blocks in more than one way. They got very creative!

Each week, we have a couple songs that help us learn on vocabulary words and our letter of the week. We typically give one of those songs a makeover. We use highlighter tape to find any sight words and wikki stix to circle our letter of the week. This week we were on the hunt for "h."

Finished Makeover!
In Science, we have been talking about matter. We have learned that matter can be a solid, liquid, or a solid. We made a simple book, and we have sorted pictures into categories. We will continue learning about matter this coming week.

On the first Thursday of each month, a retired teacher comes and reads to our class. This week, she read Imogene's Antlers. This story is about a little girl who wakes up one morning with antlers on her head. Mrs. Roberts brought a set of real deer antlers, and each student got to hold them and try to hold them up to their head. I, of course, took pictures of each one! The kids got a kick out of watching the pictures the next day on the Smart Board.

Our second quarter ends on Friday. I am doing grade card assessments right now. You should see grade cards come home Wednesday, January 23.

We will not have school on Monday, January 21 because of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. We will be learning about Martin Luther King, Jr. next week.

Please continue to send warm clothes for your students. If the wind chill is above 20 degrees, we go outside. They have recess for about 45 minutes each day. If the students have proper clothing, they are allowed to play in the snow if there is snow cover. They have to option of changing out of their snow boots at the beginning of the day if they bring a different pair of shoes so their feet do not get so hot.

Scholastic Book Orders are due on Friday, January 18th. If you want to order online, go to www.scholastic.com/bookclubs and our code is LDH7X. If you send your order in your child's folder, please send cash or a check made out to Amy McPheron, as I make one order once I have all the orders.

Next week, our letter will be L, and our sight words are are, that, and do.

:) Miss McPheron
