Groundhog Day, Marshmallows and Koosh Balls

Last week was a busy week. We finally had some full days without 2 hour delays.

Towards the end of the week, we started talking about groundhog day. We watched a video that gave us some great information about groundhogs and read several books. On Friday, we made groundhogs and made predictions about what the groundhog would see on Saturday. Most of the kids predicted the groundhog would not see his shadow - which proved true!
We spent some time last week working on number words to help with our sight words one, two, three, four, and five. We used Koosh Balls to play a game on the Smart Board. The kids got to throw the Koosh Ball at a target that linked to one of these words. They had so much fun, and they were getting practice with numbers and number words!

One of our standards for kindergarten says that students will be able to add and subtract within 10. They need to be fluent in their addition and subtraction facts up to 5. We have been working with addition for a while, but we have started focusing on subtraction since Christmas. We used marshmallows last week to show how many marshmallows would be left if they ate some, then they wrote the number sentence.

I know this weekly wrap up is later than usual, but this week we are working on the letter e and have 3 new sight words - here, from, and go. We have started to work on counting by 5s, and will be looking at nickels soon.

A note came home in your child's folder today about tomorrow. We have a scheduled early dismissal at 12:45 PM. However, if we end up having a 2 hour delay tomorrow morning, we will not release early. The early release will be rescheduled if that happens. If we do not have a two hour delay, the original scheduled early release will happen.

Thanks for reading!
:) Miss McPheron
