Weekly Wrap Up

This week, we learned about pumpkins, main idea, and numbers beyond 10.

On Monday, we had a Magic Show that was sponsored by North Central Electric Cooperative. We learned about ways to be safe with electricity.
In Math, we worked on showing numbers up to 20 on 10s frames. The kids are becoming very quick at representing numbers! In case you are curious, we fill 10s frame left to right, from top to bottom - just like we read. We do 2 colors so they easily can see how many rows are filled.

In Science, we brainstormed words about pumpkin and then came up with questions as a class to study. We wanted to know:
  1. What does a pumpkin look like inside?
  2. What does a pumpkin look like inside?
  3. What can we do with a pumpkin?
  4. How can we measure a pumpkin?
  5. How does a pumpkin grow?
We measured the height with cubes, the outside (circumference) with links, and counted the number of lines on the outside. We learned that the more lines there are, the more seeds there will be! We started counting some of the seeds using a 100s chart, but stopped after we reached 150. We got to taste some toasted pumpkin seeds today!

Next week, we are going to be learning about bats. Our letter is C, and our new sight word is at. We will keep working on this week's words as well. We are going to work on counting to 100 and we should be taking our chapter 3 math test this week. On Monday, you will see Math homework come home. Please help your child - the directions are at the bottom - and send back the next day!

Grade cards will come home on Wednesday. Please return the envelope by Friday.

Thanks to everyone who has purchased things from the book fair - each classroom has money to spend on books for our kids now!

Weekly Wrap Up

Today was day 40 of school. This year is moving right along! The kids are growing every day and learning new things!

In Reading this week, we read Nature Spy and learned about what we can observe in nature if we look closely. We wrote about what we see in nature and learned some new vocabulary words. We also learned about proper nouns and used our names as examples. We are reading more regularly now that we have mastered more sounds. We started reading with partners this week.

In Math, we are working on numbers bigger than 10. We are showing them on 10s frames and practicing recognizing them and writing them. If you want to help your child at home, identifying numbers 11-20 is a great place to start! Writing numbers in paint or in shaving cream makes a fun way to practice!

In Science, we worked on living and nonliving things. We learned that living things breathe, move, grow and change, need food and water, and can make more like themselves. We wrote a class book about living and nonliving items. Each student wrote a page and we will assemble it and enjoy it in our class library throughout the year!

Next week, we are working on the letter P and our new sight words are we, my, like and or. We are working on main idea and words to describe. In math, we will continue working on numbers beyond 10 and identifying numbers all the way up to 100! In Science, we are starting our pumpkin study.

Weekly Wrap Up

We had a good week - we worked really hard and had a lot of fun!
We finished chapter 2 for math. Test scores were posted on Power School yesterday. We were working on numbers from 6-10. We worked on representing the numbers with objects and on tens frames. We also worked on putting the numbers in order.

In Reading, we worked on compare and contrast. The kids were awesome at describing ways that things were different or the same! We read a nonfiction book called Flowers and learned about the different elements of an informational book, like the Table of Contents and Headers. Our letter was Aa and we worked on reading more books independently. I encourage you to read to your child every night and to also have them read to you! More of the books from their reading bags will be sent home to keep this week.

In honor of Columbus Day, we went exploring! We found a leaf and then used our senses to describe it.

We read a book called In 1492 and talked about who Christopher Columbus was. Students made their own explorer - named after themselves and Columbus!

Next week, we are starting numbers beyond 10. We will start with numbers up to 20, but then work with hundreds charts to identify numbers up to 100! A list of the standards we are covering was attached to your weekly newsletter that came home on Friday. In Reading, we are working with the letter Ss and adding the sight words but and on. In Science, we are going to learn about living and nonliving things.

I am really enjoying this group - they love to have fun and they work so hard! Hope you have a great weekend!
