Weekly Wrap Up

We finished our first full week of kindergarten! The kids are doing SUCH a great job with learning procedures and learning during our subjects!

In reading this week, we worked on rhyming words, characters, and letter identification. We worked on understanding the book we are reading by answering questions and having conversations with a friend. We learned the sight words "I" and "am." Next week we will add "and." There were some home activities you can do next week on the back of the newsletter today. Here are some students working on drawing a character today.

In Math, we are working on answering the question "How can we show how many?" We have worked with numbers 1-5 and represented them with pictures, numbers, and objects. Here a chart we made as a class to answer the question.
Next week, we are going to be comparing groups and decided if they are greater than, less than, or equal to. I'm planning on homework on Tuesday, so keep an eye out for it!

In Social Studies, we learned about our country and learned the Pledge of Allegiance - ask your child to say the pledge and see how well they do! There's a lot of big words, and we practice every day. We drew the flag and its parts on a brace map that is hanging in the hallway. We also colored the flag that came home yesterday.

Next week, we are going to be learning how to sort objects by their properties for Science.

You can see some pictures from Open House on the East Website

First Week Success!

We finished our first week of kindergarten! We are working on learning routines and rules. Next week, we will be beginning our curriculum for Reading, Math, and Social Studies. I had such a great time getting to know your students this week.

Just a couple notes:
  • Keep up the good work with pick up - I will begin to recognize you and it will go faster. Please let me tell the students they may leave just so I can keep them all safe and make sure they get with the right person.
  • Any lunch money needs to be in their orange folders in an envelope
  • Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns - if you email, I will definitely respond by the end of the day, but maybe not during school
  • It's hot in our classroom - dress them as cool as possible!
  • If you ever need 2 copies of something (not student work, but newsletters, grade cards, etc) because of parenting situations, please let me know.
We read Pete the Cat Rockin' In My School Shoes and took a tour of the school. We also made crowns to work on learning to use our supplies.

We also read The Kissing Hand and made raccoons that go with the character from the book.

Another book we read was Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, which a lot of students were familiar with. We made a letter to go with the first letter of our names, and we will hang them in the hallway on a coconut tree once they dry.

Have a great weekend, I will see you Monday!

Welcome!

If you here, you may have received your packet in the mail for the coming school year. Welcome to kindergarten! I am so excited for what the school year holds, and am looking forward to meeting you at Open House on Monday, August 18 from 5:30-6:30. You will bring your supplies and get to see our classroom!

If you are looking for some information, here are some pages you can check out.

I encourage you to be reading every day. Also, your child will be more successful starting kindergarten if they can write their name independently, use scissors, and color nicely. Another area to work on before school starts is letter names and number recognition.

If you are wanting to get involved with the PTO at East, there is a meeting scheduled August 12 at 6:30 in the East School Library.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me amy_m@usevs.org

I'm looking forward to meeting you!
