I somehow made it through the week and forgot to take pictures, so here's an update on what we are working on!
Math: We are working on subtraction. We are using concrete objects to model it and practicing (a lot) writing equations. It is a little tricky switching from addition to subtraction, so we are doing a lot of repetition to show that subtraction makes the number gets smaller and we are taking away from the big number.
We are doing weekly timed math tests - so keep practicing those math facts! It's not for a grade, but I really want the kids to knows these facts fluently, so as they move on to higher grades, they have foundational skills. These tests are half sheets and they have 1 minute to complete 10 facts. If there is a smiley at the top, they move on to the next level.
Reading: Our books for our reading series for the next few weeks are all about transportation. We will be doing some informational writing about different transportation. That means they need to list the topic and write some facts about it. They should not include any opinion in it.
We are continuing to work on blends, and soon we are going to introduce some chunks (digraphs - sh, ch, th, etc).
Science: We are learning about dental health this week. We are going to do an experiment to see the effects of the food we eat on our teeth.
Social Studies: We learned about Abraham Lincoln and George Washington for President's Day this week. We looked at several resources to help us compose some facts as a class. We read nonfiction books and watched some informative videos on Brain Pop Jr. The students talked with each about what they learned, and then we wrote some sentences together about each president. I love kindergarteners - they were more interested in what the person liked, like horses or where we can find them, like on money. They were unimpressed by what it meant to be president of our country, since it is kind of abstract at this age. :)
Spring pictures should be rescheduled, and I will let you know when I know when that is.
The late start on March 10th has been canceled.
Please let me know if you have any questions!
