A Week of Walking

We had a fun week this week! We set the goal of walking one million steps as a school, and ended up walking 4,387,437! As a kindergarten class, we walked 616,100 steps. Rambo came on Friday and we walked in our neighborhood.

It's amazingly difficult to get good pictures of the kids while they're walking...

We learned to tell time to the hour this week. The kids did great reading a clock and drawing hands to show times.

We learned about open vowels. These are long vowels at the end of the words. We used fruit loops as our o's to practice writing these words.
Next week we are learning about money (pennies, nickels and dimes) and the oo chunk in works like hoop and hook. We are going to learn about different types of insects as well while we observe our painted lady caterpillars that arrived this week.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Weekly Wrap Up

We had a short week this week coming off of spring break. I was at our district's Kindergarten Screening Thursday and Friday, so the kids had a sub.

In Math, we did some review of sorting objects using different rules. The kids told me they could sort by color, sides, vertices, size, shape, or object. I introduced a new way to sort - by count. Our table groups worked together to sort groups by the number of objects.

Next week in math, we will learn to tell time to the hour. In reading, we are working on open vowels (hi, go, me) at the end of words and the ck chunk at the end of words. We will work on another prefix, un, as well - the kids are doing great with these!

Our plants have sprouted! We are being scientists and using a plant observation journal to draw our plants each week. We learned about plants we eat this week. Next week, we are learning about our earth and ways to take care of it.

Next week is our One Million Healthy Steps Week! The whole school is counting our steps to work our way to one million steps. Please wear tennis shoes every day next week. We will try to get walks in outside on the days it doesn't rain, and may even be walking the halls to get some steps inside. We have pedometers to share as a class - the hospital and Walmart donated those for us! Let me know if you have any questions!

Easter Wrap Up

We had such a fun week this week!
We have been learning about plants. We learned about the life cycle of a plant and drew each step.

We learned about the needs of a plant and made flip books.

My favorite part of our plant unit is when we actually plant seeds! My dad is a horticulturist, and came to teach us about seeds and help us plant. The kids had a blast. We planted marigolds and looked at the seeds with magnifying glasses.

In Math this week, we finished up our measurement study - the kids did great comparing objects and using rulers. We sorted jellybeans and then made a graph and did some addition sentences.

We also had the boxtop competition on Wednesday. A paper came home today that said how many boxtops we collected as a school. Thanks for supporting our school! We won the competition and each kindergartener got a basketball hacky sack.

The PTO hosts an Easter Egg Hunt each year for all the students at East. One student in each class finds an egg with an extra prize in it, and all the students get candy. A big thanks to the PTO for putting on the egg hunt!

-No School Friday and Monday for Spring Break
-Library on Tuesday

Have a great long weekend!
