Weekly Wrap Up

This week we started studying geometry. In kindergarten, students need to be able to name flat (2-dimensional) shapes and describe them using vocabulary like sides and vertices. We have learned about circles, squares, rectangles, triangles, and hexagons. We have used smaller shapes to make bigger shapes - this takes a lot of thinking to manipulate the shapes to form a new shape!

We will be making shapes from components (sides and vertices) next week and continue to make shapes from smaller shapes.

In Social Studies, we have been learning about wants and needs. We learned that we have 4 basic needs: food, water, clothing, and shelter. We also talked about how families have to make choices to meet needs and wants. We wrote letters to Santa about a want. We read nonfiction books to learn about wants and needs.
I was so impressed by the kids using the resources in our room to help them remember the 4 basic needs - they would refer to these posters throughout the week.
We did several sorts to solidify our knowledge of wants and needs.

Next week we are going to learn about wild reindeer and how they survive. We will be writing a report - but just one sentence at a time! I've been impressed this week with how far we have come with writing. Their sentences are becoming more complex and have more words. Keep up the good work!

If you have any questions, let me know!
