We've completed just over 1 full week of kindergarten! We are working on learning routines and procedures. We also started academic work this week with lots of hands on learning!
We have explored with pattern blocks. I love the creativity of the students in our class!
In Math, we are working numbers 0-5. Students were very successful counting objects to show those amounts. We are working on writing each number as well. Hands on learning is so important for their development as mathematicians, so every day we have used a new tool for counting.
We have practice writing numbers and letters. Our white boards and dry erase markers have been working out really well!
Building fine motor skills is important for the development of hand muscles at this age. We have used playdoh, beads on pipe cleaners, peeled stickers, and pinched q-tips for painting dots.
In Reading, we learned about Picture Power - using picture clues to help determine an unknown word. We also worked on Pointer Power - using the pointer finger to track (point to) each word in a text/book. Students read a couple different books using these Reading Super Powers! I'm so proud! Right now, we are focusing on sight words and picture clues. Soon we will learn to put sounds together to decode (sound out) words.
On Tuesday this week, reading bags will come home for the first time. Right now, there's only one book in the bag, but students should be able to read the book themselves. Make sure they point to the words on their own and use Picture Power to determine the words. There's a red sheet for you to sign. Please return the reading bags on Wednesday. We will use the reading bags to practice independent reading at school so it is important they don't stay at home.
